Black canvases
Black canvas on a stretcher — for bright, striking work
A black canvas is cloth with a matt dark primer in place of the usual white. Light and bright colours look noticeably more saturated against that ground: the same shade of neon, white or gold reads brighter and sharper on black than on white. That is why black canvases are often chosen for gifts, interior pieces and art projects where impact matters.
What is inside
The base is cotton cloth at 320 g/m². The primer is applied in two coats of matt black paint, without sheen and without gaps: the ground comes out even, dense and uniformly dark across the whole surface. It accepts acrylic, oil, gouache, pastel, metallic markers and outliner pastes.
The stretcher is pine, modular, with wedges for retensioning. The stretching is gallery-style and the side edges are covered by the cloth — the painting looks finished even without a frame.
What people usually paint
Night landscapes and space subjects look excellent on black canvas, as do neon compositions, abstracts, low-poly work, floral motifs in white and gold acrylic, and lettering. It is a popular base for minimalist, loft and Scandinavian interiors.
