Linen canvas on a stretcher — a professional ground for oils

Linen canvas is the choice of those who paint in oils and want the cloth's pronounced texture. Unlike smooth cotton, linen has a coarse plain weave: the paint sits on it differently, the stroke comes out more alive, and the finished work looks more textured and more museum-like — linen is what the masters of academic painting worked on.

How linen differs from cotton

Natural linen fibres are stronger and longer-lived than cotton: linen canvas does not stretch over time, does not sag, and holds its tension even under dense palette-knife layers. The surface has a natural grain that shows through thin glazes and gives the work character. Many artists choose linen precisely because the weave itself becomes part of the picture.

Which techniques suit it

Linen canvas is first of all for oil painting — portraits, landscapes, still lifes, academic studies. It also suits acrylic with heavy body, mixed media, and copies of classical works. The primer is acrylic, in three coats — the canvas is ready to work straight out of the packaging, with no further preparation.

Stretcher and sizes

The cloth is stretched on a modular pine stretcher, 18x35 mm, with corner wedges. The stretching is gallery-style — the edges are covered by the cloth and the painting looks complete without a frame. The catalogue runs from 20x30 cm and compact study formats up to large interior pieces, including the elongated 30x70, 30x90 and 40x70 cm formats that suit landscape and panoramic compositions.
