Gold canvas on a stretcher — a noble ground for painting
A gold canvas is cloth with a striking metallic coating in a warm gold tone. It is a decorative statement in itself: even unpainted, a canvas like this already looks like a finished interior object, and as a ground for painting or lettering it turns an ordinary piece into something genuinely celebratory.
What makes it special
The surface carries a durable metallic coating that does not flake or darken with age. The gold is even, with a light shimmering shift — as on icons and old lithographs, but without excessive glare. Colours behave interestingly on such a ground: dark shades gain depth, semi-transparent ones take on a stained-glass glow, and high-contrast white and red work looks particularly festive.
What to paint with
Acrylic, oil, acrylic markers and outliner pastes all work well on gold canvas. It is most often used for icons and sacred subjects, Art Nouveau style portraits, floral compositions, abstracts, and New Year and wedding gifts. It is a popular base for lettering and calligraphy.
Stretcher and stretching
The cloth is stretched on a modular pine stretcher, 18x35 mm, with wedges for retensioning. The stretching is gallery-style and the side edges are covered — the painting looks complete without a frame.
