Liquid varnishes

Liquid varnishes for paintings — brush application

Liquid finishing varnishes are the classic format for coating paintings. Applied with a flat wide brush or foam roller directly from the jar. Unlike aerosol varnishes, they provide a thicker, more wear-resistant coating, are more economical for large formats, and allow you to control the layer thickness by eye.

Advantages of liquid varnishes

  • Economical consumption — one 250 ml jar is enough for 2–3 paintings 50×70 cm.
  • Stronger coating than aerosols — better protection from mechanical damage.
  • You can adjust the thickness with a thinner (for solvent-based varnishes) and work in several layers.
  • Shelf life 2–3 years with a properly closed jar.

How to apply liquid varnish

The painting is placed horizontally and cleaned of dust with a soft brush or dry cloth. The varnish is taken onto a wide flat synthetic brush (flute) 50–80 mm wide. Apply with parallel strokes in one direction, without returning to already covered areas. After 30–40 minutes of drying the first layer, you can apply the second — perpendicular to the first. Drying — 24–48 hours in a dust-free room at 18–22 °C.
